At the outset of the second quarter of 2013, only a single sector earns an Attractive rating. My sector ratings are based on the aggregation of my fund ratings for every ETF and mutual fund in each sector.
The consumer staples sector may be a less volatile sector than most, but that does not mean it is immune to market volatility. Buying XLP and shorting PSCC (or PBJ) puts investors in a position to profit no matter which way the sector goes.
Despite the Consumer Staples Sector being ranked #1 in my Sector Rankings for ETFs and Mutual Funds report, PSCC is one of the worst sector ETFs I cover.

Consumer Staples is one of my top-ranked sectors. As detailed here, only it and the Information Technology sector get my Attractive rating. Sector ratings, like fund ratings, are based on aggregation of my ratings for each of the stocks.
The consumer staples and information technology sectors are tops among the ten major sectors. Both get our “attractive” rating. Our Sector Roadmap report ranks and rates all of the 10 sectors. It also benchmarks all sectors against the S&P 500, which gets our “neutral” rating and the Russell 2000, which gets our “dangerous” rating.
I am not a smoker or tobacco user, and I do not like to be around smokers. However, that prejudice does not blind me from the fact that Lorillard, Inc. (LO) is a “very attractive” stock. I recommend investors buy it as well as the following ETFs because of their large allocations to LO and their attractive-or-better investment ratings...

If you want to be in a sector ETF, the Consumer Staples Sector is the only place to shop. However, not all ETFs are made the same. Despite the predominance of Attractive-rated stocks in the Consumer Staples Sector, there are still ETFs that investors should be careful to avoid.
